BACKGROUND

Facing sinking approval ratings and the risk that Republicans could lose control of Congress in 2026, President Donald Trump pushed Texas Republicans to redraw their districts to cut five Democratic seats. Governor Gavin Newsom countered by calling California’s special election to add five Democratic-leaning seats. If approved, this would temporarily bypass the independent commission that normally draws California’s congressional district lines until 2030.
