About the event

Join us for an engaging and enlightening afternoon designed to empower Black women and girls. This FREE civic engagement program will focus on issues facing Black women. We seek to curate an advocacy and empowerment space for mothers and daughters (13 and older) to network and learn, recognizing the role mothers play as the first leader and role model for their daughters.

Mothers bring your daughters! Daughters bring your mothers!  Sisters bring your sisters! Black women are a phenomenal force when we lead together. The stakes for women are at the highest levels we've seen regarding voting and reproductive rights, economic justice, health care,  preserving our history, educating our children.

Sessions to Include:

CIVICS 101

The basics of how our government and democracy work, how your vote counts and what’s at stake for Black women in 2024.

MY DAUGHTER'S KEEPER/ MY MOTHER MY SHERO

This panel of mothers and daughters will share thoughts on how we train our daughters for leadership and help them build confidence - as well as what mothers can do to demonstrate and model leadership.

BOSS LADY MOVES

Black women entrepreneurs are the fastest growing segment of small business owners in the nation right now. The owners of Southern Girls Desserts, a highly successful bakery with two locations in Los Angeles, will share their success story.

SUPER WOMAN SYNDROME

The strong Black woman archetype suggests we must hold back our needs and portray ourselves as strong, independent and responsible for the problems of others. This notion is in fact detrimental to our health. What can women do to untie the cape and prioritize our own well-being?

GOT ISSUES? GET ORGANIZED!

Shirley Chisholm famously said if they don’t have a seat at the table; bring a folding chair. Advocacy doesn’t need permission. Learn tips to organize to bring awareness to your cause.

WHAT WILL YOU DO? ACTION PLANNING:  With support from facilitators Gwen Coley and Neelura Bell you will leave the symposium with a plan to take action on any issue important to you.
